Can't decide when to book your Japan holiday? Let International Rail help you choose the best time in terms of weather, attractions and much more!
If you've been considering taking that holiday to Japan, March
to May is the perfect time, as it offers you a chance to escape the
crazy weather, storms and fires we've experienced of late for the
clear, mild conditions of Japan's late Spring.

Not only is the weather better in Japan during this period, but
it's also one of the most popular times of the year for tourists -
meaning you'll enjoy better prices and more attractions. Here's
just some of what you can look forward to in Japan in Spring:
- MARCH: If you travel to Japan from March onwards you can view
the country's famous cherry blossoms in full bloom at local parks
(such as the Shinjuku Gyoen, home to
over 1500 trees) and at various other Cherry Blossom Festivals.
With the flowers only blooming for a week, it's an experience not
to be missed. You can also witness the Omizutori Festival in Nara,
at the 1200 year old Todaiji
Temple.
- APRIL: A highlight of April is the Yayoi Festival, held at
World Heritage Site the Futarasan Jinja
Shrine, which features colourful floats and parades
from eleven different towns. Another beautiful festival worth
watching is the Takayama Festival at the Hie-Jinja
Shrine, which features thousands of
costumed, adorned dancers moving with and around marionettes,
floats and more.
- MAY: Don't miss the Kanda Matsuri this year - as it's only held
on odd years. This massive festival is one of the three most
important that Japan holds, involving hundreds of teams taking part
in processions through Tokyo. The
Hakata Dontaku is another gathering known to draw millions annually
in Fukuoka city as the country's
largest citizen's festival.
These are just a few of the many activities going on in Japan's
busy Spring season. The best way to get the most out of your
journey during this time is to book a Japan Rail Pass that will
allow you to travel freely throughout the country. That way you can
decide on attending whatever catches your eye when you get
there!
