Seat and Sleeper Reservations

A reservation will ensure that you have a seat or sleeper accommodation on a certain train. With direct access to several global railway systems, International Rail specializes in reserving trains throughout the world.

Rail Pass Holders

UK/ Europe

  • Reservations & supplement fees for day trains and overnight services are not included in the price of your rail pass.
  • Reservations open between 60 to 120 days prior to the train date, and can be purchased either in advance or at the train station on the date of departure.
  • Most high-speed and overnight trains require reservations, including many of the trains in France, Spain and Italy.
  • Reservations on most trains can be made live online on this website (use the "Rail Ticket Search" at the top left corner of this pager)
  • In order to ensure you able to reserve a seat, we strongly recommend that you make a reservation as far in advance as possible. It is important to know that reservations can be subject to availability on certain trains and may sell out during busy periods.
  • Reservation and Passholder supplements vary depending on the operating railway.
  • Below is a guide based on costs per person per train.

European High Speed Trains - AUD15 to AUD65

Regional Trains - AUD15

(Note: some regional trains are 2nd class only and cannot be reserved)

UK Trains - AUD20 (seats)

USA

  • Reservations on Amtrak network of trains are free of charge
  • Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance of travel
  • Reservations must be booked and paid for prior to traveling in a sleeper

JAPAN

  • Reservations cannot be made in Australia prior to departure.
  • Seats can be reserved at local railway stations throughout Japan

PLEASE NOTE: If you require a reservation to be made by International Rail prior to your departure, a $20 process fee (for reservations booked online) or a $40 process fee (for reservations booked over the phone or by email) is charged once on the order. This fee is charged in addition to the cost of the actual seat reservations or supplements charged by the railways.

Individual Train Tickets

UK/ Europe/ USA

Reservations are included in the ticket price for most high speed and overnight trains. These are commonly referred to as "Global Tickets" and include the following train types:

  • TGV - France/Germany/Belgium/ Switzerland
  • Thalys - France/Belgium/Holland/Germany
  • AVE/Talgo - Spain/France
  • Freccia Trains - Italy
  • Eurostar UK/France
  • Amtrak Services - USA
  • ViaRail - Canada

On regional and non high speed trains (where possible), reservations are optional and can be purchased as a supplement to a point to point ticket. These are commonly referred to as "Ticket+Reservation" and include the following train types:

ICE - Germany

EC - Europe

IC - Europe
