USA Rail Pass Conditions

Pass Conditions

  • This will be an e-voucher and is not valid for travel. You must exchange this voucher for a rail pass at an Amtrak station.
  • Travel must begin within one year of the date the pass is issued.
  • You must nominate a start date.
  • The pass must be completed within 180 days of purchase.
  • You must nominate a pick up date and station.
  • The pickup date must be on or before the start date of the pass.
  • If you do not pick up your pass by the date you specify below, your pass will be canceled.
  • USA Rail passes cannot be purchased or used by residents of Canada or  the USA.
  • You cannot board a train without a reservation.
  • Your USA Rail pass is valid for economy class seats only.
  • Upgrades can be made for sleepers and business class seat when making reservations.
  • Upgrades must be purchased in addition to the pass and are subject to availability.
  • Passes are not valid on the Acela, Metroliner, Autotrains & Thruway motorcoach connections (7000-7999 series).
  • Passport numbers and dates of birth are required.

 

Segments

A segment = Everytime you disembark a service. For example, a direct service without a change is 1 segment. A journey that has 1 change would be classed as 2 segments.

 

Restrictions

Travel is restricted to four one-way trips between two cities, and to all cities in between, over the same route. For example, the following trips would use up the four trips over the Washington, DC to New York route segment:

  • Trip 1: Washington, DC to New York
  • Trip 2: New York to Washington, DC
  • Trip 3: Washington, DC to Philadelphia
  • Trip 4: Philadelphia to Washington, DC

 

Children

  • One infant (under the age of 2) can travel free of charge when accompanied by an adult (16 years of age and older).
  • 50% discount for children ages 2-15

 

Pass Refunds

  • E-Vouchers that have not been exchanged must be cancelled with International Rail prior to the start date nominated on the pass.
  • If the E-voucher has been exchanged the pass and all reservations must be presented to International Rail or an Amtrak ticket office in the USA prior to the first date of travel.
  • A minimum cancellation fee of 25% for pass applies for approved refunds.
  • Upgraded accommodation will have higher cancellation fees if refunds are applicable.
  • Once e-vouchers have been exchanged, lost or stolen passes are not refundable and cannot be replaced. Any upgrades or reservations issued against the pass will also be invalid and non refundable.
